Cash Versus Car

By law all vehicle CO2 emissions are published by the manufacturers and appear in brochures and vehicle price lists.
So what are the CO2 emission calculations for Tax Year 2008/2009

The grams per kilometre range is:
Minimum of 140 (15%)
Maximum of 240 (35%)

The exact percentage calculation is based on the following:
Every 5 Gm/K attracts an increase of 1% for the BIK calculation up to a maximum of 35% at 255Gm/K.

For example:
Vehicle CO2 = 200 Gm/K 200-155 = 45 Increase in BIK = 9% Add this 9% to base level of 15% and the BIK calculation rate increases to 24%.

Where the vehicle is diesel a further 3% is added to BIK calculation. The maximum BIK calculation cannot exceed 35%.

How is the BIK calculated?
Once the correct percentage has been obtained as outlined above, this percentage is then calculated on Vehicle List Price (New) including delivery, VAT and accessories but excluding RFL and FRF.

BIK will be due as follows: How do I find out what my BIK is costing me in real terms?
Simply take your BIK for the vehicle and fuel if appropriate and then apply either the higher or lower tax banding (40% or 23%) and apply this to your BIK. This will give you an annual cost and divide by 12 to give the equivalent monthly cost.

The BIK percentage calculation as outlined above is then applied to a figure of £14,400. Our example would therefore be £14,400 * 24% = £3456.

Can this BIK be reduced?
Yes. Company Car drivers can reduce their BIK by making personal contributions up to £5,000.

So therefore ask yourself the question:

7 My vehicle does not produce the same fuel consumption figures as shown in the ‘New Car Fuel Consumption and Emission Figures’ publication and/or the Internet site.
Because of the need to maintain strict comparability of results achieved by the standard tests they cannot be fully representative of real-life driving conditions. Firstly, it is not practicable to test each individual new car; thus only one production car is tested as being representative of the model and may therefore produce a better or worse result than another similar vehicle. Secondly, there are infinite variations in driving styles and in road, car and weather conditions, all of which can have a bearing on the results achieved. For these reasons the consumption achieved on the road will not necessarily accord with the official test results.

How is the fuel consumption test conducted.
The test is outlined in Directive 93/116/EC and provides results that are more representative of actual average on-road fuel consumption than previous tests. There are two parts: an urban and an extra-urban cycle. The cars tested have to be run-in and must have been driven for at least 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometres) before testing.

Urban Cycle:
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20oC to 30oC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50km/h), average speed 12mph (19km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4km).

Extra-Urban Cycle:
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).

Combined Fuel Consumption Figure:
The combined figure presented is for the urban and extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part. When purchasing a new car what information regarding fuel consumption can I expect to find at the point of sale. The results of the standard tests have to be shown on labels fixed to every new car on display in showrooms and on forecourts, and dealers must have fuel consumption figures of all new cars available for prospective car buyers to consult on request. These requirements do not apply in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

Vehicle Replacement Insurance (VRI)

What is Vehicle Replacement Insurance (VRI)? Although your car insurance gives you invaluable protection, it does not give you all the protection you need. Should your new car be stolen or written off the insurance company, at best, will only pay you the current market value of your car. This could leave a considerable gap between what you receive and what you need to pay out to get a new car. V.R.I. will pay the difference for you. V.R.I. will refund you the difference between what your insurers pay out and the original invoice price of your car. In essence, it’s a ‘new for old’ insurance top-up.

Vehicle Replacement Insurance is available for all New and Used vehicles up to 8 years old at time of purchase. Vehicle Replacement Insurance covers you for a period of 3 years from the date of purchase and is paid out as a supplement to your Comprehensive motor insurance.
