We recommend some green superminis as well as listing the best in class based on their CO2 rankings.

Environmental issues come first, but we've also taken into account what the cars are like to drive, own and live with.

What Car? Recommends
• Mini 1.6D Cooper hatchback It oozes style and matches its looks with an entertaining drive, without compromising safety or style. Admittedly, there isn't much room inside, but do you buy this sort of car if you want to lug loads? Strong residual values are boosted by strong demand for the car. A particulate filter cleans up emissions to 104g/km.

• Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i
Toyota share a large market share for a very good reason. The small three-cylinder petrol engine that powers knocks out just 109g/km in CO2 emissions, making these some of the most eco-friendly cars on sale.

Whichever version you choose, you'll get the same great fuel economy: an average of 61.4mpg is good enough to trouble even the leanest-burning diesel superminis. They have higher emissions than the Polo and Mini but are considerably cheaper.
