Volkswagen has kicked off a spectacular celebration for the 50th anniversary of its iconic Golf model with a truly unique twist—a specially designed hot-air balloon has taken to the skies over Cappadocia, Turkey, to mark this momentous occasion.
The '50 Years of Golf' hot-air balloon made its debut early Sunday morning, September 1st, soaring above the stunning landscapes of Cappadocia's Love Valley. The balloon, named Sultan Series PH-370, joined hundreds of others in the breathtaking dawn skyline, capturing the attention of thousands of visitors who flock to the region each morning to experience its famous balloon rides.
This special balloon flight was flanked by both a classic Golf Mk I and the recently updated Golf Mk 8, symbolizing the evolution of Volkswagen’s most successful model over the past five decades. With 16 passengers on board, the balloon provided a memorable view of the anniversary celebrations from above.
Throughout the week, select media members will also have the opportunity to experience flights in the balloon and enjoy test drives of every generation of the Volkswagen Golf, from the original Mk I to the latest Mk 8. All of this will unfold against the backdrop of Cappadocia’s picturesque landscape and its balloon-filled skies.
The Golf's journey began with its original Mk I model, designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro and launched in 1974. Since then, the Golf has evolved through eight generations, selling over 37 million units worldwide and becoming Volkswagen’s best-selling car. Few vehicles have managed to define and continually set the benchmark for their segment quite like the Golf.
Mike Orford, Head of PR and Communications at Volkswagen UK, expressed the significance of the celebration: “The Golf is celebrating a major milestone this year—50 years of production. What better way to honor this iconic model than with a sky-full of giant birthday balloons? Very few manufacturers can boast such a long-standing, innovative model, and we believe this celebration truly reflects the Golf’s remarkable legacy.”
As Volkswagen’s flagship model reaches this impressive milestone, the '50 Years of Golf' balloon serves as a fitting tribute to a car that has not only defined its segment but has also continued to innovate and delight drivers around the world.
