The Volkswagen Golf, celebrating its 50th anniversary, has solidified its place as one of the greatest cars of all time by winning two prestigious ‘Legend’ awards. The Golf was named The Sunday Times Legend Car of the Year and The Sun Legend Car at the 2024 News UK Motor Awards.
Launched in 2018, the News UK Motor Awards showcase the editorial expertise of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun, and talkSPORT. Judged by top automotive journalists, the awards celebrate the best cars across categories like luxury, sports, family, adventure, and electric vehicles.
These latest accolades add to the Golf’s five-decade-long success story. Recently, the model was also honoured as the Best Car of the Half Century at the British Motor Show. To celebrate its 50th birthday, a special event in Cappadocia, Turkey, saw media from around the world witness a uniquely designed hot-air balloon, marking the occasion in front of thousands of onlookers.
Will Dron, editor of The Sunday Times website Driving.co.uk, praised the Golf, saying: "With one of the great automotive icons turning 50, there was only one contender for our legend award this year. The Golf remains the hatchback benchmark—a family car that’s equally suited for everyone, from painters to princesses. The Mk 8 continues the Golf's legacy with its polished, winning formula. Happy birthday, Volkswagen Golf—here’s to the next 50 years!”
Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, added: “For five decades, the Golf has been a cornerstone of the Volkswagen line-up and a key part of the British motoring landscape. The latest models uphold the Golf’s reputation for classless appeal, outstanding quality, and unbeatable practicality. With new infotainment tech and fresh styling, the Golf is set to continue its success.”
The latest Volkswagen Golf is now available in 10 versions in the UK, including Life, Match, Style, R-Line, Black Edition, GTE, GTI, GTI Clubsport, R, and R Black Edition, with prices starting from £27,420 (including VAT).
