The Mazda CX-80 has been awarded 2025 Car of the Year by Diesel and EcoCar Magazine, taking the top spot in their prestigious 2025 Diesel Top 50 ranking. Adding to Mazda’s impressive success, the Mazda CX-60 achieved seventh place overall and was named Best Large Diesel SUV.
Both the CX-80 and CX-60 are powered by Mazda’s advanced in-line six-cylinder 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine. The CX-80 pairs this engine exclusively with all-wheel drive and delivers 254ps, while the CX-60 offers drivers the option of rear-wheel drive 200ps in Exclusive-Line trim.
Mazda’s award-winning e-Skyactiv D engine features the brand’s Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI) technology — an innovative system that achieves exceptional combustion efficiency, low emissions, and outstanding fuel economy. These attributes give the CX-80 class-leading environmental performance, setting new benchmarks for diesel-powered SUVs.
The powertrain also incorporates M Hybrid Boost, Mazda’s 48V Mild Hybrid System, which enhances both performance and fuel efficiency. Together, the hybrid system and DCPCI technology deliver superb driving range, refined performance, and low emissions, while offering 254ps at 3,750rpm and 550Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,400rpm. This combination provides the strength, capability, and smooth driving feel that make the CX-80 ideal for both everyday use and towing.
Commenting on the Mazda CX-80’s Car of the Year title, Diesel and EcoCar Magazine Editor Ian Robertson said:
“Mazda has pulled off something remarkable with the CX-80, its first entry in the large seven-seat SUV class, delivers a new benchmark for space, refinement and long-distance comfort amongst diesel SUVs. Under the bonnet the creamy six-cylinder 3.3-litre engine is paired with mild-hybrid, plus with the reassurance of four-wheel drive, the CX-80 feels muscular and effortless whether you’re tackling the open road or urban life.
“The cabin oozes quality, with finely crafted materials and intuitive controls, while the third row offers enough space for adults. It’s a true family flagship that balances six or seven-seat practicality with desirability.”
The Mazda CX-60 also drew high praise from the judges, earning its place as Large SUV of the Year. Ian Robertson added:
“Mazda’s push into the premium sector continues with the CX-60, which impressed us all over again this year.
“As in the CX-80, the straight-six e-Skyactiv D engine is a masterpiece, blending brawn with refinement and CX-60 customers can choose 200ps rear-wheel drive or 254ps all-wheel drive, both offering smooth and confident progress. Inside, the CX-60 is one of the best-built SUVs we’ve tested, with simple ergonomics and stunning materials. It’s a driver’s choice in a class dominated by badge snobbery.”
As Mazda’s most spacious SUV ever offered in Europe, the three-row CX-80 combines elegant design with practicality. Its wheelbase is 250mm longer than the CX-60, providing the additional room needed for a genuine seven-seat layout. The model also stands 26mm taller, enhancing comfort and visibility, while maintaining the same width and refined silhouette that define Mazda’s SUV family.
UK customers will have a choice of five well-equipped trim levels: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus. Buyers can also tailor their CX-80 with three middle-row seating configurations – a standard seven-seat bench, or two six-seat layouts featuring captain’s chairs, with either a walk-through space or a fixed centre console for added luxury.
The CX-80 introduces two new Takuminuri paint finishes to the UK: Artisan Red and Melting Copper. Artisan Red delivers a deep, refined tone ideal for larger vehicles, while Melting Copper offers a unique, textured metallic finish inspired by molten copper. In total, nine colours are available, including Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Platinum Quartz, Arctic White, Rhodium White, Machine Grey, Soul Red Crystal, Artisan Red, and Melting Copper.
Commenting on the Mazda CX-80’s success, Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda Motors UK, said:
“The Mazda CX-80 is our new flagship SUV, a car that sits at the very top of our range in the UK, it offers a unique blend of space, practicality, luxury and stand-out design. It combines progressive design anchored in Japanese aesthetics with outstanding on-board accommodation that delivers quality, style, flexibility and superior technology, all combined with the signature driving performance delivered by every Mazda.”
He added:
“We are delighted that the diesel CX-80 has won this accolade, this recognition confirms that it is a car that challenges the established premium brands in the UK SUV market.”
In addition to its Diesel and EcoCar Magazine success, the 3.3-litre diesel Mazda CX-80 also earned second place in its category at the Caravan and Motorhome Club 2025 Towcar of the Year Awards, showcasing its impressive towing strength and versatility.
At Western & Barnetts Mazda, we’re proud to celebrate Mazda’s continued recognition for design, innovation, and craftsmanship — with the CX-80 and CX-60 exemplifying the brand’s unique blend of performance, practicality, and premium quality.
