Mazda Museum in Hiroshima reaches major visitor milestone as it continues to showcase Mazda’s history, technology and passion for vehicle manufacturing
Mazda has celebrated a major milestone at the Mazda Museum in Hiroshima, Japan, with the corporate museum welcoming its two-millionth visitor since opening its doors in May 1994.
Located at Mazda Motor Corporation’s headquarters in Fuchu-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture, the Mazda Museum has become an important destination for Mazda owners, automotive enthusiasts, international visitors and anyone interested in the history and technology behind one of Japan’s best-known car manufacturers.
The two-millionth visitors were a group of 71 fifth-grade pupils from Ohkou Elementary School in Hiroshima, who were visiting the museum as part of a social studies field trip.
A commemorative ceremony was held at the museum to mark the occasion, where Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro congratulated the students and reflected on the significance of the milestone.
Moro said:
“Congratulations on being the Mazda Museum’s 2 millionth visitors. I would be delighted if today’s tour inspires you to think, “Cars are cool” and “Manufacturing is exciting”. Reaching this milestone of two million visitors has only been possible thanks to everyone who has visited the Mazda Museum over the years. Looking ahead, we will continue to cherish every opportunity to connect with our visitors and further enhance the museum as a place where people can experience the Mazda brand and its deep ties to the local community.”
As part of the celebrations, Mazda presented Ohkou Elementary School with a 1:18 scale model of the MAZDA ICONIC SP as a commemorative gift.
Since opening in 1994, the Mazda Museum has provided visitors with an insight into the company’s development, showcasing Mazda’s history, automotive technologies and approach to vehicle manufacturing.
Following significant renovations in 2005 and 2022, the museum now provides visitors with a journey through Mazda’s story, from the company’s origins through to its vision for the future of mobility.
The museum is particularly significant because of Mazda’s close relationship with Hiroshima, where the company is headquartered and where much of its history has been shaped. As well as celebrating Mazda’s vehicles and engineering achievements, the museum helps showcase the wider manufacturing heritage and culture of the Hiroshima region.
Visitors can explore Mazda’s development as a car manufacturer while gaining a greater understanding of the technologies, craftsmanship and manufacturing processes that have helped define the Mazda brand.
The Mazda Museum also plays an important educational role, welcoming school groups and students from across Japan.
In recent years, Mazda has expanded the museum’s hands-on activities, giving younger visitors the opportunity to experience aspects of vehicle manufacturing for themselves. These include casting workshops for children, designed to demonstrate the craftsmanship and technical processes involved in automotive production.
This combination of Mazda’s history, engineering, design and interactive experiences means the museum provides an educational experience for visitors of all ages.
For Mazda enthusiasts, the museum also offers an opportunity to understand more about the philosophy and values behind the cars they drive, while international visitors can discover the deep connection between Mazda and Hiroshima.
Reaching two million visitors represents more than three decades of the Mazda Museum welcoming people from Japan and around the world.
Mazda says it will continue to use the museum to introduce more people to the appeal of vehicle manufacturing while preserving and sharing the values that have shaped the company since its foundation.
The museum also provides Mazda with an opportunity to celebrate Hiroshima’s rich manufacturing heritage and pass that history on to future generations.
For Mazda, the milestone demonstrates the continuing interest in the company’s heritage, automotive innovation and manufacturing story – from its roots in Hiroshima to its vision for the future.
