Mazda MX-5 Celebrated with Lifetime Achievement Award at 2024 Scottish Car of the Year Awards

Mazda is celebrating a milestone moment as the iconic MX-5 has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Scottish Car of the Year Awards (SCOTY). Presented by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW), this accolade underscores the enduring legacy of the world’s best-selling two-seater roadster, coinciding with its 35th anniversary since launching in 1989.

Over the years, the MX-5 has consistently impressed at the SCOTY Awards, earning numerous accolades across generations. Notable wins include the Best Drop Top title in 2006 and 2007 for the third-generation model, and a repeat win in 2015 with the debut of the fourth-generation MX-5. Additionally, its appeal in the pre-owned market has been recognised, including Used Car of the Year in 2016 and Best Used Car under £15k in 2023.

ASMW President Alisdair Suttie praised the MX-5’s legacy, stating:

“For 35 years, the Mazda MX-5 has delivered thrills and driver engagement at an accessible price. With over a million sold globally, it’s Scotland and the world’s favourite sports car. Recently updated, the MX-5 remains as brilliant as ever and is hugely deserving of this Lifetime Achievement Award. Whether new or used, the MX-5 is a sports car that captivates both heart and head.”

Enhancements for 2024

The latest MX-5 lineup, introduced at the start of 2024, features design and technology updates, ensuring it remains at the forefront of driving pleasure. Exterior updates include redesigned LED headlights and taillights, while inside, a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen multimedia display and updated instrument panel enhance the cabin’s functionality. New USB-C ports and an advanced MZ Connect system further modernise the user experience.

Performance remains at the core of the MX-5’s identity. The range includes four Roadster and four RF models across three trims: Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura. Engine options include the 132ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G and the more powerful 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G, with performance enhancements such as a front strut brace, Bilstein dampers, and a newly developed Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential for optimised handling and stability.

The range-topping Homura trim features Recaro seats with leather and Alcantara accents, maintaining the driver-focused cabin synonymous with the MX-5’s Jinba Ittai philosophy—perfect harmony between car and driver.

A Legacy of Excellence

Since its debut, over 1.2 million MX-5s have been produced, with more than 135,000 sold in the UK. The fourth-generation alone has sold over 25,000 units in the UK since 2015, underscoring its popularity in both new and used markets. Buyers of Mazda Approved Used Cars benefit from comprehensive inspections, warranties, and roadside assistance, ensuring confidence and value.

Jeremy Thomson, Mazda UK Managing Director, reflected on the award:

“The MX-5 is the epitome of Mazda’s commitment to driver engagement and performance. This Lifetime Achievement Award recognises its enduring appeal and the passion it inspires. Whether purchasing a new or used model, the MX-5 guarantees an affordable, world-class sports car experience.”

For 35 years, the Mazda MX-5 has set the benchmark for lightweight, agile, and engaging sports cars, continuing to deliver the joy of driving across generations.
