Mazda MX-5 Named ‘Best Convertible’ at 2025 Carbuyer Awards: Celebrating 35 Years of Iconic Open-Top Driving

The Mazda MX-5 has been crowned ‘Best Convertible’ in the 2025 Carbuyer Awards, marking another achievement for the legendary sports car as it celebrates 35 years on the road. First introduced at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show, the MX-5 continues to capture the hearts of drivers with its timeless appeal and thrilling open-top experience. The latest accolade adds to Mazda’s impressive tally of awards for the MX-5, which remains a favourite among driving enthusiasts worldwide.

Carbuyer Praises the Classic Appeal of the MX-5

Paul Barker, Editor at Carbuyer, expressed what makes the MX-5 so special, even amid a rapidly evolving automotive landscape: “We might be living through the biggest shift in the automotive landscape ever, but hop in a Mazda MX-5, reach up and unfurl the fabric top before heading off towards a B-road, and it’s easy to forget it. Few other cars offer old-school, wind-in-the-hair thrills like this.” He added, “The MX-5 has been honed over the decades, and it’s an icon that offers superb handling and engines that are both zesty and economical.”

What’s New for the 2024 Mazda MX-5

The 2024 model year brings fresh updates that enhance the classic MX-5 driving experience. Drivers can choose between four Roadster and four RF models, available in Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura trims. The entry-level Prime-Line models come equipped with a 132ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine, while Exclusive-Line offers the choice of a 1.5-litre or the more powerful 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G. Homura trims, sitting at the top of the line-up, are exclusively paired with the 184ps engine.

New for 2024, the MX-5 features a refined Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential that adds durability and optimises stability during cornering. Designed to keep Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai” (horse and rider as one) driving philosophy alive, the updates ensure that the car maintains its famous balance and agility. These engineering tweaks enhance the MX-5’s ability to stay in sync with the road, with improvements to the electric power steering and a more precise throttle response adding to the sense of oneness between driver and car.

Enhanced Cabin Experience and Driver-Focused Upgrades

Inside, the 2024 MX-5 boasts a new 8.8-inch touchscreen multimedia display with improved navigation clarity and Mazda’s latest MZ Connect system. With added USB-C ports, the cabin offers enhanced functionality without sacrificing its driver-focused layout. The Homura trim goes further with premium Recaro seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara, providing both comfort and style for the open road.

For track-day enthusiasts, the Exclusive-Line and Homura models introduce a Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track mode that allows for later intervention, providing a more dynamic experience without compromising safety.

A Legacy of Lightweight, Affordable Driving Pleasure

Since its debut, the Mazda MX-5 has been the benchmark for affordable, driver-centric sports cars. With over 1.2 million units produced in Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima, including more than 135,000 in the UK alone, the MX-5 has a devoted following. Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director at Mazda Motors UK, reflected on the MX-5’s enduring appeal: “The MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car. The current model continues to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying driving experiences, so it’s great the latest model has been recognised by Carbuyer in their 2025 Awards.” He added, “The MX-5 remains true to its original purpose: an affordable, lightweight, and fun-to-drive roadster, a rare gem in a market with fewer true driver’s cars.”

With its unique blend of agility, simplicity, and pure driving pleasure, the Mazda MX-5 stands out as an icon in today’s automotive landscape, a beloved choice for those who seek authentic open-top thrills.
