Mazda Showcases Creative Craft Experience at Homo Faber 2024

Mazda is celebrating a successful debut at Homo Faber 2024, an exhibition organized by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship. Taking place in Venice from August 29 to September 30, this year’s theme, ‘The Journey of Life,’ curated by Hanneli Rupert and brought to life by Art Directors Luca Guadagnino and Nicolò Rosmarini, highlights the profound role that handmade objects play in our lives.

A Vibrant Kickoff in Venice

The pre-opening event, held from August 29 to 31, showcased over 800 exquisite objects crafted by more than 400 artisans from 70 countries. This vibrant gathering of VIP guests, lifestyle and design media marked the beginning of Mazda’s journey alongside global artisans at one of the world’s premier exhibitions of contemporary craftsmanship. Notable attendees included Ikuo Maeda, Executive Fellow and former Global Head of Design at Mazda, and Jo Stenuit, European Design Director at Mazda.

Mazda’s Craftsmanship on Display

In alignment with Homo Faber’s theme, Mazda seamlessly integrated its rich traditions of Kodo Design, Monozukuri, and Takumi craftsmanship into the event. The company presented a bespoke exhibition and offered interactive workshops that allowed visitors to engage hands-on with various crafts.

Highlights included immersive papercraft workshops where attendees could try their hands at creating pocket globes and Japanese bookbinding under the guidance of Italian master artisans. These activities echoed Mazda’s commitment to celebrating craftsmanship and human talent, reflecting its brand promise of “Crafted in Japan.”

As part of its engagement, Mazda showcased its #MazdaDiscovers YouTube series, which features content creators traveling the world to meet and learn from local artisans. The latest episode of this series, focusing on the timeless craft of globe-making with Venetian master Leonardo Frigo, was prominently featured at the event. Visitors had the unique opportunity to create their own pocket-globes, prepare paper for printing with a hand press, and trace the paths of ancient explorers.

In addition to globe-making, participants could delve into the art of bookbinding. Under the tutelage of the master artisans from Antica Legatoria Ofer, guests crafted their own travel journals using the Japanese stab binding technique, adding a personal touch to each creation.

Reflections on a Successful Start

The pre-opening days attracted global guests who immersed themselves in Mazda’s vision of craftsmanship. Media and VIP attendees enjoyed the papercraft workshops, creating personalized souvenirs of their experience at Homo Faber 2024.

Ikuo Maeda reflected on the event, stating, “At Homo Faber, you truly see the essence of Mazda. Our goal is to create beautiful forms through Japanese artisanship. The celebration of crafts and respect for artisans are deeply embedded in our DNA. Products should evoke emotions and deliver a profound sense of satisfaction.”

Jo Stenuit echoed this sentiment, noting, “Our participation in Homo Faber highlights how our philosophy, deeply rooted in Japanese artistry, resonates across various disciplines. We’ve been able to celebrate our commitment to creativity and craft alongside some of the world’s finest artisans.”

Katarina Loksa, Head of Brand at Mazda Motor Europe, praised the event: “Homo Faber 2024 is a tribute to the art of making. We are delighted to invite visitors to engage directly with the crafts of pocket globe making and Japanese bookbinding. This experience perfectly mirrors Mazda’s philosophy of blending heritage, creativity, and a personal touch.”
