Mazda’s e-SKYACTIV R-EV Technology Wins Special Award at Car of the Year Japan

Mazda has announced that its innovative plug-in hybrid system, the e-SKYACTIV R-EV, has been honoured with the Executive Committee Special Award at the 2024-2025 Car of the Year Japan awards. This marks the second time Mazda has received this prestigious recognition, having first won it 13 years ago for the Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV in 2011.

The e-SKYACTIV R-EV is a groundbreaking series-type plug-in hybrid system that employs a rotary engine as a generator, a feat only Mazda has successfully achieved in mass production. By leveraging the compact and high-output characteristics of the rotary engine, the system integrates seamlessly with a high-output motor and generator to provide a smooth, powerful driving experience. This advanced technology enables the vehicle to operate as a battery-powered EV for everyday use while utilizing the rotary engine to generate electricity for extended range during long-distance journeys.

Ichiro Hirose, Mazda’s Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer, and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), expressed his gratitude, stating:
“We are pleased and honored that the e-SKYACTIV R-EV received this special award. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who supported us, including Mazda fans, business partners, and the media. We will share the joy of this award with our employees and continue striving to develop a rotary engine that meets the needs of our time.”

Mazda remains committed to pursuing the “Joy of Driving” as part of its core value, “Human Centric”, while aiming to deliver the “Joy of Living” by creating memorable experiences that enhance its customers’ everyday lives.
