At Western & Barnetts Mazda, we believe that colour isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about how it feels. At Mazda, this philosophy is taken to new heights, where each shade is carefully crafted to tell a story of motion, heritage, and innovation. For Mazda, colour is a vital part of design—it’s an experience.
From the serene blues of the ocean to the rich warmth of a copper sunset, colour shapes the way we experience the world. It influences our emotions and perceptions, and at Mazda, it defines the connection between car and driver.
“We can strengthen the emotional bond to a product with colours,” explains Alena Gersonde, Senior Colour & Material Designer at Mazda’s European R&D Centre. And it’s that emotional bond that Mazda has captured with stunning hues like Soul Red Crystal—a colour that’s become an icon of the brand’s passion and motion.
Developed to complement Mazda’s Kodo design language, Soul Red Crystal represents the epitome of dynamic elegance. Its depth and intensity are only possible through a meticulous multi-layered painting process that brings out its inner glow.
But red is just the beginning.
Mazda’s colour journey begins long before paint touches metal. It starts with inspiration—mood boards, materials, textures, and cultural traditions that evoke emotion.
One such tradition is Aizome, the ancient Japanese art of indigo dyeing. This centuries-old technique produces deep, expressive blues through a hands-on, meditative process. Seeking to bring that richness to life, Mazda’s colour designers immersed themselves in the craft—hand-dyeing fabrics to explore how this traditional blue might translate to the body of a car.
From textile to technology, this unique blue was then tested on vehicle panels using Mazda’s advanced Takuminuri paint process, which brings depth and movement to each finish. The result? A mesmerising, experimental indigo hue that glows with energy and elegance—still in development, but full of promise.
“In this day and age, it’s easy to lose touch with the manual production of objects,” says Alena. “But the colours and materials we develop are real. They will surround our drivers every day. That’s why working with our hands still matters.”
Mazda’s design team doesn’t stop at heritage—they travel the world to absorb the latest trends and innovations. During Milan Design Week 2024, Mazda’s designers were inspired by new materials, tones, and ideas, keeping their palette fresh and their concepts globally relevant.
This creative exploration led to the birth of a new shade: Melting Copper.
Inspired by the natural beauty of molten metal, Melting Copper blends fine-grained metallics with subtle black pigments to achieve a colour that exudes strength and sophistication. It makes its debut on the all-new Mazda CX-80, an SUV that perfectly balances toughness and grace.
At Mazda, every colour is more than surface-deep. Each one is a reflection of craftsmanship, emotion, and movement—core values at the heart of Mazda’s design philosophy.
Just as Soul Red Crystal symbolises passion, and Melting Copper reflects strength and elegance, each new hue brings the vehicle to life, forging a connection between driver and car that’s felt, not just seen.
At Western & Barnetts Mazda, we’re proud to be part of a brand that doesn’t just build cars—it creates experiences. From the first glance to every drive, Mazda’s colour design transforms metal and paint into something meaningful.
Whether it's inspired by tradition or forged through innovation, Mazda’s colours are designed to move you—literally and emotionally.
