But how does the Skoda Kodiaq measure up to busy family life?
I took it for a test drive to find out.
As a busy working mum of two, there are four key things I look for in a car…
Okay, five things… does it look good?
Is it reliable?
With a 94.7% reliability rating from WhatCar? The Skoda Kodiaq regulary ranks above its VW owned counterparts, Audi and Seat in surveys and issues are reported few and far between, mainly small niggles with infotainment systems or air con. The Kodiaq uses tried-and-tested Volkswagen Group parts (engines, gearboxes, platform), which helps a lot with long-term dependability. Because of that, it benefits from “shared development” rather than brand-new, unproven tech. The Kodiaq also feels very solid to drive, with a chunky exterior,
So yes, I would say the Kodiaq is a very reliable family SUV, especially in it's class.
Is it safe?
Safety is absolutely paramount when choosing a family car. In fact, any car really. I remember buying my first car and my dad being hellbent on me having “as much metal around you as possible”. At the time, it meant very little to me. Now that I have two children in the car, it really lands.
The Skoda Kodiaq features an advanced safety cage made from high-strength steel, designed to help protect passengers by keeping the cabin stable in the event of a serious collision. Its strong safety performance earned the Kodiaq a 5-star Euro NCAP rating in 2024, highlighting its impressive level of occupant protection.
Pretty impressive, but more than that, it’s the built-in safety features that make the Kodiaq feel like an extra set of hands on the road. Features such as Front Assist, Side Assist, Pedestrian Monitoring and the Multi-Collision Brake System all work to make driving feel safer and more controlled. Some models even include a Driver Alert System with fatigue recognition, which can detect when a driver may be distracted or drowsy.
The safety technology is extensive and really helps you feel confident behind the wheel when driving with your family. Personally, I couldn’t drive a car without parking cameras, including rear-view and 360-degree Area View systems. The Kodiaq’s advanced driver assistance features are integrated into the infotainment screen to make manoeuvring easier, taking the uncertainty out of tight spaces and the dreaded parallel park. Overall, the Kodiaq just feels safe, solid dependable and the endless safety features give you the peace of mind
Is it spacious?
In short, YES. Yes, yes, yes!
The Skoda Kodiaq is an incredibly spacious SUV, making it an ideal family car. Think enormous boot space, generously sized rear seats that can accommodate even the chunkiest car seats with ease, and deep, comfortable front seats that make longer journeys feel effortless. For me, the leg room is one of its standout features.
I recently had the task of taking my 6ft 3in nephew to training and even he commented on how comfortable the car was. There’s loads of headroom, the rear seats recline for added comfort, and the cabin is wide enough for three adults to sit comfortably in the back if needed, and that’s just in the five-seater model. Of course, the Kodiaq is also available as a seven-seater, making it ideal for larger families or, quite frankly, a small football team.
Spaciousness is one thing, and the Kodiaq absolutely delivers there, but what really stood out to me were the clever and thoughtful design features. My bulky 'Egg' travel system pram fitted into the boot with room to spare, something I regularly find myself complaining about when testing other brands and models.
Then there are the little touches that make everyday family life easier. Ever left the house in a mad rush for the school run, bundled everyone into the car, and just as you’re about to set off, the heavens open? Living in Scotland, that feels like a daily occurrence. Thankfully, the Kodiaq has a built-in umbrella compartment in the driver’s door, which feels like a stroke of genius.
On frosty mornings, there’s also an ice scraper neatly tucked inside the fuel filler flap as standard. Again, it’s these small but thoughtful details that make the car feel designed for real life, taking some of the stress out of getting from A to B.
There’s even a small screen-cleaning cloth stored in the centre console for wiping sticky fingerprints off the 13-inch infotainment screen. A tiny detail, perhaps, but one that proves Skoda has really thought about the people who will actually be using this car every day.
When it comes to space, there’s honestly no contest for me. The Skoda Kodiaq more than delivers.
I have two car seats, both with Isofix bases and swivel mechanisms for easier access in and out of the car. In my previous car, I constantly had to make sure the driver and passenger seats were pushed slightly forward so the car seats could rotate fully without getting stuck halfway round. In the Kodiaq, it simply isn’t something I even have to think about.
Again, it’s a small thing, but I’m all for those little solutions that remove one more mental task from the endless list running through your head as a parent. If you know, you know.
Funnily enough, the same nephew also described the passenger seat as being “like sitting in a gaming chair”, which honestly sums it up quite well. The seats are deep, supportive and generously sized, making even longer journeys feel comfortable.
If you’re looking for a family car, whether you’re just starting a family and want a car to begin that journey with, your family is already complete, still growing, or you simply value space, practicality and clever design, the Kodiaq could well be the SUV for you.
But the big question is, does it offer good value for money?
Is it good value?
Is the Skoda Kodiaq actually good value for money? In my opinion, absolutely.
Now, I know you probably expected me to say that, but here’s why I genuinely think it delivers when it comes to value.
One of the biggest strengths of the Kodiaq is that it feels far more premium than its price tag suggests. You get the space, practicality and technology you’d expect from much more expensive SUVs, but without the hefty price jump that often comes with premium badges. Even the entry-level and mid-range models come very well equipped, so you don’t feel pressured into choosing the top specification just to get the features families actually want.
The Kodiaq is a large, practical SUV with strong safety credentials, huge amounts of space and low-interest finance. Škoda really understands what buyers are looking for right now: value without compromise.
The five-seat Kodiaq in particular strikes a really nice balance. You still get the enormous boot space and roomy cabin, but without stepping into something that feels unnecessarily huge to drive every day. It feels sensible in the best possible way.
What I also like is that the Kodiaq doesn’t feel like a car where all the good features are hidden behind expensive upgrade packs. Across the range, you’ll find useful family-focused features such as large infotainment screens, parking assistance systems, smart storage solutions and plenty of driver assistance technology included as standard or available at reasonable trim levels.
Of course, there are cheaper SUVs out there, but many of them start to feel basic once you compare cabin quality, practicality and overall comfort. The Kodiaq manages to feel solid, refined and thoughtfully designed while still representing very good value for money, especially when compared with more premium rivals.
So yes, when you look at everything you’re getting, the space, comfort, reliability, safety features and current offers, I do think the Skoda Kodiaq is excellent value for money for family life.
