Škoda is marking a major milestone as the modern Superb reaches its 25th anniversary. First unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 11 September 2001, the Superb has spent the past quarter of a century building a reputation for spacious interiors, long-distance comfort and clever technology.
Four generations later, the model has become an important part of Škoda’s success story, with almost 1.8 million Superb vehicles delivered to customers around the world.
The latest, fourth-generation Superb continues this tradition while bringing the model firmly into the modern era. Available as both a Liftback and Combi estate, it offers the most extensive powertrain line-up ever seen on a Superb, including petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. The plug-in hybrid models can offer an electric driving range of around 120 kilometres, making the Superb an increasingly versatile choice for both business and private drivers.
Although the modern Superb arrived in 2001, the name itself has a much longer history.
The original Škoda Superb name was introduced in 1934, when it was used for the Škoda 640. At the time, Superb models represented the very best of Škoda’s engineering and were produced in a variety of body styles until 1949.
More than 50 years later, Škoda brought the famous name back, launching the first modern Superb in 2001. With its impressive rear passenger space, generous equipment levels and range of engines, it represented Škoda’s return to the mid-size market.
Four generations of evolutionEach generation of the Superb has introduced new technology while retaining the qualities that have made the model so popular.
The first-generation Superb, launched in 2001, established the model’s reputation for exceptional space, comfort and practicality.
The second generation arrived in 2008 and introduced Škoda’s clever TwinDoor system, allowing the rear of the car to be opened as either a saloon boot or a hatchback. The range was subsequently expanded with the introduction of the Superb Combi estate, as well as all-wheel-drive versions.
In 2015, the third-generation Superb brought another significant step forward. It featured a more distinctive design, improved connectivity and an expanded selection of driver-assistance technologies. In 2019, the Superb also became the first Škoda production model to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The fourth-generation Superb, introduced in 2023, has continued that progression. Its redesigned interior combines modern digital technology with Škoda’s Smart Dials, while the model offers an extensive range of efficient powertrains designed to suit different driving needs.
Over 25 years, the Superb has developed a strong following among both private customers and business users. Today, more than half of Superb models are delivered as company cars, highlighting its appeal as a practical and comfortable choice for business drivers.
Its combination of generous passenger space, a versatile boot, advanced technology and efficient powertrain options has also made the Superb popular with organisations including government departments, public authorities and police forces across a number of countries.
With almost 1.8 million vehicles delivered across four generations, the Škoda Superb has played an important role in the brand's growth internationally.
A quarter of a century after its modern revival, the Superb remains true to the qualities that defined it from the beginning: space, comfort, practicality and innovative technology.
