The 90s marked a new era in the UK:Thatcher gave way to Tony Blair’s New Labour, Germany was reunited, and Brit pop culture became trendy all over the world.

On the car scene, things were changing too, saloons were no longer very popular and designers were pushing new and compact cars that were big on engine power and short on parking hassles. Check out our list of the most popular 90s cars.

Ford Fiesta

After totally dominated the field in the 80s, the Ford Fiesta didn’t slow down in the 90s. When the Mk3 model launched in 1989, it catapulted the Ford Fiesta to the top of the UK market. At the time of writing the Ford Fiesta has sold a staggering 4.5 million models and is the best-selling car in Britain.

Today, you can find both new and used Ford Fiesta sat good prices with reliable engines, which is perhaps why this model has maintained its popularity for over 40 years.

Ford Escort

The Ford Escort was still in demand in the 90s, but it’s reign as the most popular car in the UK was starting to slide in favour of its more compact cousin, the Ford Fiesta. However, it still sold over 4 million models before it was taken off the market in the early 2000s, making it one of the most sought after 90s cars despite its decline. The Ford Focus is the Escort’s natural successor as it is a shade roomer than the current Fiesta.

Vauxhall Astra

By the 90s the Cavalier was well and truly replaced by the Astra as the go to Vauxhall car. The Mk3 was the model that dominated the 90s, in part because of its excellent safety features. In 1998 it was finally replaced with the Mk4, which had much better handling, and an even better safety credentials. Today it’s in its seventh generation, and new or used, remains one of the UK’s best-selling cars.

Ford Mondeo

We love our Fords in the UK, and the whilst the Sierra was starting to see a dip in sales, the Mondeo was the standard issue family vehicle. In fact, it was so synonymous with families in Britain Tony Blair built a campaign around securing the “Mondeo Man’s” votes. It won numerous awards and as of 2020 it’s in its fourth generationwith no sign of going anywhere soon.
