Curious about what a heads-up display is and whether it’s something you want to prioritise the next time you’re buying or renting a car? Check out our handy guide and get to grips with everything you need to know about heads-up displays, also known as HUDs.

Heads-up displays explained

Heads-up displays are a type of technology that allows useful information, like the current car speed or directions, to be projected directly on to the road in front of them. This allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road, with all of the information they’re looking for kept firmly in their line of sight. That means they don’t need to look away to check upcoming turns, for example.

While HUDs were introduced primarily as a feature for premium cars, they are becoming more widely available as the technology advances.

Which cars have HUDs right now

There are a whole range of excellent cars boasting HUDs available right now. Here are a just a few of our favourites.

Volkswagen ID.7

Highly technologically advanced, the Volkswagen ID.7 is a fully electric fastback that also boasts a brilliant heads-up display. All models are equipped with an augmented reality HUD as standard, and features include displaying useful information like your battery charge level as well as lane-level navigation with arrows that sync up to the real world. It can project text, images and even animations onto your windscreen, to make absorbing the information as seamless as possible for all drivers.

BMW 3 Series

It’s little surprise that luxury car brand BMW was among the first to adopt HUDs and you’ll find many examples stretching all the way back to 2013 models. Now, the sophisticated technology is also available in the BMW Series 3, including the Series 3 Saloon and the Touring. In both of these sophisticated models, you can expect clear projections of everything from directions to safety warnings as well as your speed and the road speed limit from this smart system.

Mazda 3

The Mazda3 won the 2020 World Car Design of the Year award and it’s only been adding improvements since then, including an updated HUD that projects information like speed and safety alerts seamlessly. Another handy feature added in 2024 is the fact that the heads-up display can also show directions from a navigation app mirrored from your phone – and it’s compatible with favourites like Apple CarPlay or wireless Android Auto.

Mercedes GLE

As a premium brand, it makes sense that the Mercedes GLE also offers plenty of premium technology – including a flashy HUD with great graphics and a smart design. From cruise control settings to traffic conditions or speed, it covers all of the things you most want to know. It can also be customised to display the data that matters to you most and automatically adjusts depending on brightness levels.
