Introducing the New 2026 Volkswagen Grand California: A Fresh Evolution in Camper Luxury
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the latest evolution of its flagship campervan, the Grand California, ahead of its official debut at this year’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, taking place from 29 August to 7 September. Designed for modern explorers seeking the ultimate in freedom and comfort, the 2026 model year brings a host of refinements, enhanced functionality, and stylish updates to one of the most popular large campervans in Europe.
Built on the latest version of the Volkswagen Crafter, the new Grand California is more advanced, intuitive, and comfortable than ever before. The updated model will be available in two wheelbase variants – the Grand California 600 and 680 – and will enter production later this year.
Contemporary Design Meets Functional Comfort
The 2026 Grand California introduces a new interior style that blends modern design with practical living.
“The interior of the Grand California is now characterised by the new 'Atami Bamboo' décor, in which the tabletop and the work surface of the kitchenette are executed,” notes Volkswagen. “The new flooring (kitchen, dinette, cargo area), which is made of durable PVC, also has the same surface appearance. The now black faucet in the kitchen has also been redesigned. Together with the new wood look, they create a lounge-like contrast to the white interior and leave behind an almost Mediterranean yacht character.”
These updates transform the Grand California’s living space into a light-filled, welcoming environment ideal for long journeys and off-grid escapes.
Thoughtful Improvements for Everyday Adventures
Beyond aesthetics, the Grand California has been updated with clever practical solutions to improve daily usability for campers and families alike.
“In the future, the mobile dining table can also be locked on the outside of the kitchen unit in a flash, so that meals or an evening glass of wine can be enjoyed in the open air. Also new on board the California 600 (6.0 metres, transverse sleeper) and California 680 (6.8 metres, longitudinal sleeper) are luggage nets in the upper cabinets, which make it easier to stow away clothes and utensils of any kind. The new optional equipment includes a custom-fit thermal mat and blackout set for the windows in the cab.”
The new blackout set enhances privacy and climate control – ideal for both summer heat and chilly mornings.
Next-Generation Technology Comes Standard
As with the entire Crafter range, the new Grand California benefits from a range of state-of-the-art assistance and infotainment features introduced in July 2024. This includes the Digital Cockpit Pro, a new infotainment touchscreen (10.4-inch as standard, 12.9-inch optional), and an array of driver aids designed to make both urban and rural driving safer and more relaxing.
“Like all current Crafters, the Grand California models have already been standard since July 2024 with additional new details such as digital instruments ('Digital Cockpit Pro'), a new infotainment system with optically free standing touchscreen (26 cm, 10.4 inches in diameter, optionally 32 cm and 12.9 inches) and assistance systems such as 'Front Assist' (emergency brake assist including cyclist and pedestrian detection), 'Lane Assist' (lane departure warning), a parking aid (front and rear) and traffic sign recognition. Since then, 'Travel Assist' has also been offered as an option, which enables assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance.”
One small but meaningful change is the new electronic parking brake, which frees up cabin space and allows the driver’s seat to swivel more easily into the living area – a detail that seasoned travellers will truly appreciate.
The 2026 Grand California is a clear statement of intent from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: to continue raising the bar for luxury, practicality, and innovation in the campervan sector.
