New Unified Parking App Launches In The UK!

After a series of successful Government-supported pilot schemes, a new initiative is being launched to simplify how drivers pay for parking by allowing them to use just one app across multiple locations.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the British Parking Association (BPA) will be responsible for the development and management of what is being called the ‘national parking platform’. It is designed to offer a more seamless and user-friendly experience, and once in place, users will be able to pay for parking across participating facilities on their preferred app.

The project is being led by the BPA in collaboration with a group of companies that includes Ringo, JustPark, and PayByPhone. Ministers have pointed out that motorists currently contend with a confusing mix of rules, poor user interfaces and unnecessary complexity when it comes to paying for parking so this national platform will resolve these issues by linking participating car parks through a shared digital infrastructure.

Minister for the future of roads, Lilian Greenwood, said: “I’m delighted that this fantastic project is being taken on by the parking sector with no extra cost to taxpayers. This is public infrastructure done right: built by Government, shaped with councils and now delivered by the sector that knows it best.”

The new structure will involve partnerships between the parking industry and local councils, with the platform being operated on a not-for-profit basis. The Government will continue to oversee the system to ensure compliance with agreed terms and it is currently active in 10 local council areas and processing more than 500,000 transactions each month.
