If you’re looking for a small car that packs plenty of punch, then the Toyota Yaris and the Honda JAZZ are no doubt near the top of your list. Not sure which of these Japanese superminis is the right choice for you? Check out how they stack up next to each other in our handy guide.
As two well matched hybrid options, the all-new Toyota Yaris and Honda JAZZ models offer a lot of great features, as well as some stylish redesigns. Here’s how the fourth generation of each model measures up in some key areas.
The Yaris is perhaps a slightly more exciting drive, able to carry its weight lightly and accelerate smoothly from standstill. The Jazz, on the other hand, offers a slower and smoother experience – which may suit some drivers better. Both are able to reach 0 –62mph in nine-point-something seconds, so the power is there and the question is more around which experience you prefer.
Both cars have put a focus on making the most of their interiors considering their small size. The Yaris is comfortable, and effort has been put into creating an interior that feels airy, although this is less evident in the rear seats. Also, the JAZZ benefits from its trademark Magic Seats, which makes it possible to flip up the seat cushions to create extra loading space.
The Toyota Yaris uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and an e-CVT gearbox that’s connected to two electric motors with power from a 0.8kWh lithium-ion battery. The combination of combustion engine and electric motor can achieve 114bhp and 89lb ft of torque. In the Honda JAZZ, you’ll find a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a sub-1kWh lithium-ion battery with two electric motors. However, it doesn’t have a traditional gearbox, instead relying on the two engines to feed each other.
There’s not much in it when it comes to boot size, but the JAZZ does edge ahead with 298 litres in comparison to 281 for the Yaris. When it comes to entertainment and digital features, the Yaris offers an optional 10-inch head-up display, which the JAZZ has a 9-inch touchscreen display. Both have great connectivity options.
Both the Yaris and the JAZZ boast some good credentials when it comes to fuel efficiency, with the JAZZ claiming 62.7 miles per gallon and the Yaris weighing in at 65.6. They also have very similar savings on CO2 emissions too.
Well-matched in many respects, the Toyota Yaris and Honda JAZZ are perfect choices for those looking for an efficient supermini to get them from A to B.
The JAZZ has a slightly smoother and more sedate driving experience and a little more boot space, as well as those Magic Seats, making it a good choice if you’re likely to be loading up with shopping frequently. The Yaris edges ahead a little when it comes to miles per gallon and starting speeds, which might suit people who’re often on the road.
