The Volkswagen Golf eHybrid has been crowned Best Hybrid at the prestigious 2025 Autocar Awards, cementing its place as one of the most advanced and versatile vehicles in today’s automotive market.
The announcement was made during a high-profile ceremony in Central London, where Autocar's expert panel honoured standout vehicles across the industry. The Golf eHybrid impressed judges with its seamless blend of performance, efficiency, and everyday usability.
Judges praised the Golf eHybrid for maintaining the hallmark qualities of the Golf name while pushing forward with cutting-edge hybrid technology. They noted its impressive WLTP electric-only range of up to 88 miles, which allows many owners with home charging to drive daily without needing petrol. The car’s low benefit-in-kind tax rate of just six per cent was also highlighted as a major advantage for company car drivers.
In their latest review, Autocar wrote:
“The Golf eHybrid could genuinely deliver lasting change to your motoring habits as one of the most versatile cars on sale today – and all from a position of calm reassurance.”
Georgia Sharpe, Product Manager for the Golf at Volkswagen UK, commented:
“Autocar is one of the most respected motoring titles – not just in the UK but around the world. Its awards recognise the industry’s highest achievers, so we can feel justifiably proud to have received this honour for the Golf eHybrid.”
Customers in the UK currently have three Golf eHybrid models to choose from: Golf Match, Golf Style, and the sporty Golf GTE. Each model features a 1.5 TSI engine paired with a 19.7 kWh (net) battery. The Match and Style variants deliver up to 204 PS of power while emitting just six grammes of CO₂ per kilometre. For drivers seeking more punch, the GTE boasts 272 PS, 0–62 mph in 6.6 seconds, and similarly low emissions of just seven grammes per kilometre.
All Golf eHybrid models support home charging at up to 11 kW AC and rapid public charging at up to 40 kW DC.
Despite increasing competition in the hybrid and electric segments, the Volkswagen Golf remains a UK favourite. In 2024, it was one of just two non-SUVs to make the top-10 best-selling cars in the UK, alongside the Polo – further proving the Golf's lasting popularity.
Volkswagen continues its reign as the UK’s best-selling car brand for the fourth year running, with 166,304 new Volkswagen passenger vehicles registered in 2024 (source: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).
