The Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 has been named Hatchback of the Year at the inaugural Car Genius Awards, earning recognition from the experts at Car magazine.
Created to celebrate 50 years of the iconic Golf GTI, the EDITION 50 represents the most powerful and fastest production Golf GTI to date, combining impressive performance with the everyday usability that has defined the GTI for generations.
The Car Genius Awards recognise the brands, vehicles and innovations helping to shape the future of the automotive industry.
Commenting on the Golf GTI EDITION 50, Car Editor Ben Miller described it as:
“The best Golf GTI since 2016’s Clubsport S. It’s a hypnotic, wheel-cocking blend of function and fun.”
The award adds another milestone to the Golf GTI story as Volkswagen celebrates half a century of one of its most recognisable performance models.
At the heart of the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is a 2.0-litre TSI engine paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, enabling it to accelerate from 0–62 mph in just 5.3 seconds.
Enhanced suspension and chassis components have been introduced to make the most of the additional performance, while Volkswagen’s Adaptive Chassis Control comes as standard to balance dynamic handling with everyday comfort.
The EDITION 50 also sits 15 mm lower than the standard Golf GTI, giving the anniversary model an even more purposeful stance and sharper driving characteristics.
For drivers looking for an even more focused experience, an optional Performance Package reduces the vehicle’s weight by approximately 25 kg.
The package includes a twin Akrapovič exhaust system, forged 19-inch Warmenau black alloy wheels and semi-slick tyres. Adapted suspension and chassis settings, stiffer springs and revised front-axle components further enhance the car’s handling and performance.
