Volkswagen unveils the new Golf R and Golf R Estate, both featuring enhanced performance and exclusive equipment. These top-of-the-range models, now with an increased output of 245 kW (328 bhp), debut with improved driving dynamics and a host of premium features. The top speed of 155 mph can be boosted to 167 mph with the optional R-Performance package, making these the fastest Volkswagen production models, alongside the Arteon R Shooting Brake. Pre-sales begin in July, with the Golf R starting at €53,795 and the Golf R Estate at €55,065. Additionally, the exclusive Golf R Black Edition will be available from €58,440.
The new R models, based on the eighth-generation Golf, showcase a sharper design with LED Plus headlights, an illuminated VW badge, and new LED tail light clusters. Optional 19-inch “Warmenau” forged wheels, weighing just eight kilograms each, enhance brake cooling and performance on the racetrack.
The revamped infotainment system now includes the largest display offered by Volkswagen (10.9 inches), featuring improved graphics and a new menu structure. The touch sliders for climate and volume control, along with the voice assistant IDA powered by ChatGPT, have been optimised. The enhanced Digital Cockpit Pro, standard in the Golf R models, includes a Sport Skin and R-View for a more dynamic driving experience.
The interior of the Golf R models is designed with the driver in mind, featuring top sports seats with integrated head restraints. Optional black nappa leather with carbon-look elements and blue accents, along with real carbon interior applications, emphasise the high-quality design of the Golf R.
The new Golf R models are equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine delivering 245 kW (328 bhp) and 420 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. This system enhances stability and agility by distributing power individually to the rear wheels, optimising cornering.
The R-Performance package, offering an increased top speed and additional driving modes (Drift and Special), is designed for motorsport enthusiasts. The Special mode is specifically tailored for the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The package also includes a larger roof spoiler for added downforce, a GPS lap timer, and a G-meter displayed in the Digital Cockpit Pro.
The adaptive chassis control (DCC) continuously adapts to road conditions and driving manoeuvres. Managed by the Vehicle Dynamics Manager, DCC ensures the highest levels of comfort and dynamic performance, making the R models versatile for both everyday and sporty driving. The Golf R Estate offers significant flexibility with a maximum luggage volume of 1,642 litres.
The Golf R Black Edition, available at launch, features a sophisticated dark aesthetic with black VW badges, R logos, brake callipers, 19-inch Estoril wheels, and tailpipe trims. Darkened IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and the R-Performance package are standard.
Since its debut in 2002 with the Golf R32, the Golf R has been a symbol of performance and style, selling over 250,000 units globally across five generations.
