Low Emission Zones In Scotland

Low Emission Zones in the UK will continue to roll out throughout 2022 in order to help improve air quality. Let’s take a look at the low emission zones Scotland will be implementing, how they will benefit people’s health, and the low emission cars that are available to buy today.

What are Low Emission Zones?

Currently, poor air quality in certain areas is a public health issue – especially for people who have cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Low emission zones are being created to help improve this air quality. These work by setting an environmental limit on specific road spaces and only allowing access to vehicles that meet low emission standards. A penalty charge will need to be paid if a non-compliant vehicle enters one of the clean air zones.

How are Low Emission Zones being implemented in Scotland?

As part of the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland’s plan, the country’s biggest cities – Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee – are all set to introduce new and update existing Low Emission Zones from 2022 onwards. The Low Emission Zone currently only applies to each city’s local service buses, but from 1 June 2023 all vehicles entering one of the city centre zones must meet the required emission standards or face penalty fines.

What are the best low emission cars available to buy?

All new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans are set to be banned from sale in 2030. With that in mind, it’s a great idea to consider a hybrid or electric car for your next vehicle purchase. The Mercedes C 300 e and Toyota Corolla are popular hybrid options, while the Nissan LEAF and Lexus CT200h are great electric models.

However, if you want a low emission petrol car, the Smart ForTwo and Toyota Aygo are both zippy, hyper efficient urban car models that make use of every drop of petrol. You can also find larger diesel powered vehicles with the similar fuel efficiency to smaller petrol-powered engines, such as the Nissan Qashqai.

There are plenty of new, nearly new and used low emission cars at Eastern Western dealerships for you to take for a test drive in today. Just speak to one of our expert, friendly team members to make arrangements.
