What is Formula E GEN4?

GEN4 represents the fourth generation of Formula E's all-electric race car and marks the biggest technical advancement in the championship's history.

Compared with the current GEN3 Evo cars, the new generation delivers:

  • Peak power of 600kW (816PS).
  • Permanent all-wheel drive for every race.
  • 0-62mph acceleration in just 1.8 seconds.
  • 0-124mph in 4.4 seconds.
  • Top speed of over 200mph.
  • Increased regenerative braking capability.
  • Greater engineering freedom for manufacturers.

The result is expected to be the fastest, most technologically advanced Formula E racing ever seen.

How Formula E benefits Nissan road cars

One of the biggest advantages of Nissan's involvement in Formula E is its "Track to Road" philosophy.

Rather than developing racing technology in isolation, Nissan's engineers continually transfer knowledge between its Formula E programme and the company's production electric vehicles.

This works in both directions.

Lessons learned while developing the original Nissan LEAF helped shape Nissan's Formula E programme, while innovations developed on the racetrack continue to improve the efficiency, performance and control systems found in Nissan's latest electric vehicles.

The same motor can be utilised in many different ways and solutions that are applied in developing a powertrain for Formula E can be also applied to road cars, and vice versa.
"One of the key reasons Nissan decided to commit to Formula E until 2030 is because we can create this link between our R&D and the car that we are racing. The GEN3 Evo with which we won the driver's championship last year was heavily influenced by advanced R&D in Japan in the development of its hardware, specifically the gearbox and the motor. This influence massively improved the energy efficiency of its powertrain.
"Our e-4ORCE technology proves Nissan is one of the leaders in all-wheel drive technology. There is a huge opportunity with GEN4 to transfer the strong expertise of Nissan in all-wheel drive to Formula E cars and then back into our road cars. In motorsport you are simply using the same technical solutions in a context which is much more extreme."

e-4ORCE: Technology developed for everyday confidence

One of the most exciting developments in GEN4 is the introduction of permanent all-wheel drive.

This creates even greater opportunities for Nissan engineers to refine and develop the company's award-winning e-4ORCE all-wheel control technology.

Already available on the Nissan ARIYA and Nissan X-Trail e-POWER, e-4ORCE intelligently manages power delivery and braking between all four wheels to deliver:

  • Enhanced traction on wet and slippery roads.
  • Improved cornering stability.
  • Greater driver confidence.
  • Smoother acceleration.
  • Increased passenger comfort.

Sustainability remains at the heart of Formula E

Formula E continues to be recognised as one of the world's most sustainable motorsport championships.

The new GEN4 regulations introduce even greater environmental ambitions, including:

  • More than 40% of race energy recovered through regenerative braking.
  • A target of 100% reusable vehicle construction.
  • At least 20% recycled materials used throughout the race car.
  • Battery technology containing no rare earth minerals.
  • Tyres manufactured using 65% natural and recycled materials.

These innovations align closely with Nissan's long-term commitment to more sustainable mobility and cleaner transportation.

Exciting new venues for the GEN4 era

Formula E's expanding global calendar will also introduce several iconic racing circuits.

The 2027 London E-Prix moves to the famous Brands Hatch circuit for a spectacular double-header event over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, joining internationally recognised venues including Circuit of the Americas and Zandvoort.

A new high-downforce "E-Prix Unleashed" race format is also set to make its debut during selected double-header weekends.
