Double success for the UK’s Toyota Corolla in the 2024 What Car? Awards

  • British-built Toyota Corolla dominates the family car categories in the What Car? awards with two titles
  • Corolla Hatchback is Family Car of the Year
  • Corolla Touring Sports is Estate Car of the Year

The Toyota Corolla proved the master of its market at the 2024 What Car? Awards, with the Hatchback model honoured as the Family Car of the Year and the Touring Sports named the Estate Car of the Year.

It’s a home-grown success for one of the best-known and most successful car nameplates in motoring history, with both cars being built in Britain by Toyota Manufacturing UK.

They sealed their success by impressing the judging panel with their reasonable running costs, driving quality, everyday practicality and built-in reliability.

Announcing the award for the Hatchback at a presentation evening in London tonight, Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, said: “In the face of spiralling costs in many parts of the new car market, the Corolla blends still-sensible prices with outstanding real-world fuel efficiency.

“However, there’s more to it than just numbers. The Corolla offers reassuring handling and is one of the best-riding family cars you can buy. What’s more, its user-friendly interior feels built to last, something that’s backed up by Toyota’s superb reliability record.”

There was equally warm praise for the Touring Sports from Huntingford, who added: “Like its Hatchback sister, the Corolla Touring Sports really impresses with its ride comfort, feeling both supple and well controlled. Meanwhile, its hybrid technology delivers both gutsy performance and superb efficiency.

“Being an estate, none of this would matter if practicality disappointed, but passenger space is good and you get a large, square boot with a low, flat floor that’s great for lugging large loads.”

Emma Lane, general manager, brand communications said: “These awards are a much-valued seal of approval for our Corolla line-up. Today’s Hatchback and Touring Sports deliver an even stronger balance of performance and efficiency from our latest hybrid electric system – in fact the fifth generation of our world-leading technology. Moreover, the skilled teams at our TMUK plants work to the highest standards to ensure customers can be assured of exceptional quality durability and reliability, something that’s reflected in a market-leading peace-of-mind warranty that provides cover for up to 10 years.”
