Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people between the ages of 16 and 64, even those with an "indefinite" or "lifetime" award. Disabled children will continue to receive DLA until they reach the age of 16. DLA will also continue to be available for those who were aged 65 or over on 8 April 2013 (20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland).
If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, you will continue to be able to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme.
New to PIP and the Motability Scheme
If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. If you have 12 months or more remaining on your current allowance then you can apply to lease a car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter or powered wheelchair.
Unsuccessful PIP reassessment
If you are not awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, you will no longer be eligible to lease a vehicle on the Motability Scheme and they will be in touch to help support you through this transition. You will have around twelve week from the DWP’s decision to return your car. Motability will write to you giving you all the information you need, including details of their transitional support package. You may also be eligible for a pro-rata refund of any Advance Payment you made.
