New Online Account for Motorists Launched by DVLA

DVLA has launched a new service that is currently in a test phase. They are asking motorists to sign up for a new online database that allows an individual to look at their vehicles and driving license details on one screen.

In an effort to streamline the process for motorists, from the 2nd of August 2023, you can now choose to have your vehicle tax reminders digitally instead of needing the paper copy to arrive in the mail. This should make things easier, and with the launch of this new drivers and vehicles account service, the DVLA is hoping that it will be a hit with motorists. It’s currently deemed as being in the beta testing phase, and they are seeking feedback to further improve and develop what they already have.

They are asking motorists to sign up and say it’s a very simple process that will only take around five minutes. Once your account has been created, users can access the service at any time with their email address and password. So, what can you see?

Using the details you provided, the database will pull information on the following:

• Your driving license, this will include penalty points and endorsements.
• Any vehicle registered in your name, and the MOT and tax status of each vehicle.

You will also be able to make changes, including how the DVLA contact you, stopping postal reminders and creating SMS text alerts for vehicle tax reminders. (These can also be delivered via email if you prefer).

One of the Largest Databases

Once fully operational and digitised, the database held by the DVLA will have responsibility for 40 million vehicle records and over 50 million records about individual drivers. The DVLA Chief Executive, Julia Lennard, said. “We are asking motorists to help us test the service. It’s free and simple to sign up for an account. This new service is being developed, and we will be adding more features, but we want to give customers access as early as possible so they can try it out and let us have their feedback”.

You will be asked to verify your email address using a one-time passcode that will be emailed to you. You then fill in a form with your personal details, including your name, address and date of birth. You can verify your identity in the next step using the passport mentioned above, which can either be valid or out of date within 12 months. You will be asked to provide your driving license number or your national insurance number, and finally, you will create a password. Currently, the service is not available to drivers in Northern Ireland as their records are maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) Northern Ireland.
